NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Sudden storms struck several areas in this northeastern province on Monday night, and were particularly severe in Non Sung and Phimai, damaging houses, shops and causing power cuts, the provincial office of disaster prevention and mitigation reported.

In Non Sung district, 10 houses were damaged at Ban Don Plao, the Moo 15 village in tambon Mai.

Trees were toppled, some bringing down power lines and causing a blackout lasting several hours. Electricity was later returned to the area.

Similar damage occurred at many spots in Phimai district.

The office said reports from district and local leaders were being assessed so assistance could be provided.

In Wang Nam Khieo district, a section of Highway 304 at Ban Huay Nam Khen in tambon Udomsap was lashed by a heavy rain between 4-5pm.

Some trees on the median strip fell, blocking one Nakhon Ratchasima-bound lane. The strong wind and slippery road surface caused four vehicles to veer off the road and overturn. There were no serious injuries.

Police, rescuers and highway officials spent more than an hour clearing trapped vehicles and fallen trees from the highway before traffic returned to normal.
