Huge blaze razes sugarcane litter

Firefighters have spent a whole day trying to put out a fire on a 40-rai field near a sugar mill in Suphan Buri's Dan Chang district that started on Wednesday.

As of yesterday, the fire had destroyed 28 rai of field, on which 37,000 tonnes of sugarcane leaf bought from nearby farmers destined for use as fuel in power plants were laid out.

Nathapat Suwanprateep, governor of Suphan Buri, said fire crewmen had managed to bring the blaze under control, though sources said smaller fires could still be seen in some areas.

Director of Suphan Buri's Centre for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Theerayut Chanditthawong, said fire trucks would be deployed to spray water into the air around the field in a bid to reduce air pollution in the area. He said the department expected to put out the fire completely in three days.

The cause of the fire, which was first reported by the sugar mill's owner, is still under investigation.

The fire has yet to affect nearby communities, as the field is located about one kilometre from the nearest populated area.
