PATTANI: An assistant village headman was shot from ambush on a road in Mayo district on Monday night.

Pol Col Suebsakul Maneenual, the Mayo police chief, said the attack occurred about 8.50pm at Ban Khlong Tono, the Moo 3 village in tambon Sakam.

Sainuri Damaeng, 34, assistant to the Moo 1 village chief, was travelling alone on a motorcycle along a road through the village when he was shot and wounded. He was rushed to Mayo Hospital.

Police found four spent cartridges of 9mm ammunition by the roadside and collected them for examination.

An investigation was underway to determine if the attack was a personal dispute or related to the Muslim insurgency in the region.

In adjoining Narathiwat province, also on Monday, a white cloth banner with a message written in red, "Patani not Siam. Get out. Patana Merdeka", was found hung on the railing of a bridge at Ban Ire Suere, the Moo 3 village in tambon Chang Phuak of Chanae district.

Police were investigating.
