Pickup accident leads to 220kg crystal meth seizure

SURAT THANI: Police stumbled on 220 kilogrammes of crystal meth hidden on a pickup truck that overturned in Tha Chana district on Thursday night.

The white Isuzu truck registered in Songkhla province overturned on the southbound side of Highway 41 in tambon Khan Thulee during an accident.

It had been carrying a full load of cabbages, but no one stuck around to claim ownership.

Eyewitnesses told police the driver of the truck and an accomplice immediately fled the scene in a six-wheeled truck after emerging from the wreckage.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found nine sacks under cabbage bags containing 220 packs of crystal meth, also known as ya ice, weighing a combined 220kg.

Each pack had a "Guanyinwang" logo and a description indicating the content was "refined Chinese tea".

Police estimated the market value at 220 million baht and believe it was being transported from a neighbouring country in the North to the far South to be smuggled to a third country.
