Covid deaths drop, daily cases stay below 10,000

The government on Tuesday announced 9,721 daily Covid-19 cases, below 10,000 for the second day, along with 77 fatalities, the fewest in a 24-hour period since March 26.

The new numbers compared with 9,331 new cases and 84 coronavirus-related fatalities reported on Monday morning.

According to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the 77 people who died were aged from 19 to 100 with the average age of 76. One was from Germany and one from Cambodia.

Bangkok logged two new deaths and there were 10 in adjacent provinces — five in Pathum Thani, three in Nonthaburi and two in Nakhon Pathom.

Other central plains provinces further from the capital had 24 deaths — six in Rayong, four in Ratchaburi, three in Chachoengsao, two each in Chon Buri, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo and Ayutthaya, and one each in Ang Thong, Saraburi and Chanthaburi.

The North reported 11 deaths — two each in Kamphaeng Phet, Lampang and Sukhothai, and one each in Lamphun, Phrae, Chiang Rai Phayao and Phitsanulok.

The Northeast saw 28 new fatalities — seven in Nakhon Ratchasima, five in Udon Thani, four in Si Sa Ket, three each in Khon Kaen and Sakon Nakhon, two in Nakhon Phanom, and one each in Roi Et, Amnat Chareon, Kalasin and Yasothon.

The South had two deaths in Surat Thani.

The 9,721 daily cases did not include 5,016 positive results from antigen tests over the past 24 hours. This would raise the total to 14,737. All but 51 of the confirmed new cases were transmitted inside Thailand.

Of the new infections, Bangkok continued to lead the most daily cases at 3,649, followed by 372 in Buri Ram 302 in Samut Prakan, 271 in Chon Buri and 269 in Khon Kaen.

The 51 imported cases came from 18 countries. They included 10 from Singapore, seven from Australia, six from Laos and five from the United Arab Emirates.

As of Monday, a total of 118,567 people were receiving Covid-19 treatment, including 33,537 in hospitals. The remainder were in hospitel facilities (12,133) or in home/community isolation (72,483), according to the daily update posted by the Department of Disease Control.

Of those in hospital, 1,669 were seriously ill patients with lung inflammation and 804 dependent on ventilators.

Of the seriously ill patients, Bangkok had the most cases at 139, followed by 88 in Nakhon Ratchasima, 66 in Kanchanaburi, 61 in Ubon Ratchathani and 58 in Samut Prakan, the CCSA reported on Tuesday afternoon.

Vaccinations continued to progress, with 133.92 million doses administered as of Monday. The government said 81.0% of the population has now received at least one dose of the vaccine, 73.8% at least two shots and 37.7% at least one booster shot.

On Monday, 20,145 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

Since the pandemic started in early 2020, there have been 4,281,536 Covid-19 cases, including 2,058,101 cases this year, with 4,134,191 complete recoveries to date.

The accumulated death toll stood at 28,778 since the beginning of the pandemic, including 7,080 so far this year.

The highest number of Covid-related fatalities in a 24-hour period was 312 recorded on Aug 13, 2021. The highest number of cases was 28,379 on April 1, 2022.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 254,740 in 24 hours to 513.96 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 1,283 to 6.26 million.
