Daily Covid cases creep back above 8,000 Thursday

The country registered 59 more Covid-19 fatalities and 8,019 new cases during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Thursday morning.

This compared with the 56 coronavirus-related fatalities and 7,650 new cases reported on Wednesday morning.

Along with the 8,019 new infections confirmed by PCR test, a further 7,940 positive results came from antigen tests over the previous 24 hours. This would raise the total to 15,959.

According to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the 59 people who died were aged from six to 96 years and included a Briton.

Bangkok logged 16 new deaths and there were no fatalities in adjacent provinces.

Other central plains provinces further from the capital had 16 deaths including four in Rayong, three in Saraburi and two each in Chon Buri and Lop Buri.

The North reported four deaths - in Chiang Mai (2), Lampang (1) and Lamphun (1).

The Northeast saw 21 new fatalities - four each in Nakhon Ratchasima, Maha Sarakham and Kalasin, three in Sakon Nakhon, two in Nong Bua Lam Phu and one each in Roi Et, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani and Nakhon Phanom.

The South had two deaths in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani.

“All the new fatalities were elderly people, those with underlying illnesses and pregnant women and 70% of them were never vaccinated. Twenty-one were in the Northeast,” said CCSA spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangson.

The 8,019 confirmed new cases announced Thursday comprised 7,950 in the general population, 66 among prison inmates and three arrivals from other countries.

Of the new infections in the general population, 7,909 were confirmed at hospitals and 41 via mass testing.

Bangkok continued to lead the most daily cases at 2,747, followed by 253 in Roi Et, 248 in Chon Buri, 229 in Buri Ram, 195 in Samut Prakan, 189 in Nakhon Ratchasima, 177 in Maha Sarakham, 168 in Ubon Ratchathani, 147 in Khon Kaen and 140 in Surin.

The three imported cases came from the Netherland, Japan and Vietnam.

“The numbers of new cases, seriously ill patients and those dependent on ventilators are declining, and so are the new fatalities,” Dr Apisamai said.

As of Wednesday, a total of 77,427 people were receiving Covid-19 treatment (down from 78,274 on the previous day), including 26,901 in hospitals (down from 28,343). Among the remainder 10,653 were in field hospitals/hospitel facilities (up from 10,510) and 39,471 in home/community isolation (up from 39,072).

Of those in hospital, 1,353 were seriously ill patients with lung inflammation (down from 1,387) and 673 dependent on ventilators (down from 690).

Of the seriously ill patients, Bangkok had the most cases at 135, followed by 72 in Nakhon Ratchasima, 50 in Ubon Ratchathani, 47 in Phitsanulok and 46 in Suphan Buri.

The 24-hour period also saw 8,807 patients discharged from hospitals after recovering.

Since the pandemic started in early 2020, there have been 4,353,237 Covid-19 cases, including 2,129,802 this year, with 4,246,499 complete recoveries to date.

The accumulated death toll stood at 29,311 since the beginning of the pandemic, including 7,613 so far this year.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 575,343 in 24 hours to 519.14 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 1,510 to 6.28 million.

The US had the most cases at 83.95 million, up 87,487, and the most deaths at 1.02 million, up 226.
