The Royal Thai Army will provide free concerts in city parks less than a week after the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced a revival of the city's famous "music in the park" programme.

Army chief Gen Narongphan Jitkaewtae is sponsoring concerts at Benjakitti Park in Klong Toey district and at Suan Luang Rama IX Park in Prawet district, from yesterday through the end of August.

The first concert was held at Benjakitti Park and the second will also be held there on Sunday, followed by more on June 18, June 24 and June 26, from 5pm to 7pm.

The shows at Suan Luang Rama IX Park are scheduled for Saturday, June 17, June 19 and June 25.

Schedules for July and August have yet to be announced.

The army wants to bring happiness to the people now the Covid-19 situation has eased, Gen Narongphan said in a Facebook message posted yesterday.

The music fest was announced not long after Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt kicked off the BMA's "music in the park" at Wachira Benchathat Park (Rot Fai Park) on June 4, just three days after he took office. It will be held every Saturday and Sunday as part of his policy to make Bangkok a city of live music and performances.

Outdoor concerts organised by the BMA had earlier been suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.
