PATTANI: A man was found dead inside a house where he was hiding after exchanging gunshots with police and soldiers in Muang district early on Tuesday, police said.

The clash occurred about 4am when a military-police unit surrounded house No 40 at Moo 2 village in tambon Khlong Maning, Muang district.

They went there to check out reports the house was being used as a hiding place by members of the Muslim insurgent group run by Bukhori Kari.

As they closed in on the house, they were met with gunfire from inside. The security unit returned fire, police said.

After the guns fell silent, a search found one man dead from bullet wounds inside the house. He was identified as Mayaki Malaching, 30, who was from Pattani's Sai Buri district and was a suspected insurgent, police said.
