Worker nabbed for brutal murder

Petchaburi: A construction worker was arrested yesterday for stabbing to death a 75-year-old woman in Cha-am district.

Pol Maj Gen Uthai Kawindechathorn, commander of Petchaburi provincial police, said the suspect, Nonthapan, 25, living in Samut Songkhram, was nabbed in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Bang Saphan district after allegedly stabbing the woman.

The killer left her with 25 wounds in a crime which shocked the nation. He stabbed her at her house in Cha-am and took her possessions.

The suspect visited her three months ago when he was an assistant to an air conditioner technician called to her house.

Army chief tests positive for Covid

Army chief Gen Narongphan Jitkaewtae tested positive for Covid-19 after recently returning from a visit to Malaysia, says a source in the army.

He and five other army commanders who accompanied him on the official trip caught the virus, the source said.

Gen Narongphan took the trip under the invitation of his Malaysian counterpart from June 30 to July 1.

Court rules against ex-OTJ adviser

The Supreme Administrative Court has upheld a decision by the lower Administrative Court to throw out a petition by Sarawut Benjakul over his removal as adviser to the Office of the Judiciary (OTJ).

He asked the lower Administrative Court to cancel the order issued by the Judicial Commission to dismiss him in April.

The dismissal was based on the results found by a disciplinary committee set up to investigate him over the renovation of the Phra Khanong Provincial Court.

The commission voted 8-7 to dismiss him from his post as a special adviser over irregularities in the 42.3-million-baht renovation of the court.

Supermoon visible on Dhamma Day

A supermoon will be visible next Wednesday, coinciding with the Buddhist holiday Asanha Bucha or Dhamma Day, the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Narit) said.

According to the institute, the full moon will be closest to the Earth at 1.39am early on July 14, when it will be 357,256 kilometres from the planet. The super moon will be 16% brighter and 7% bigger than an ordinary full moon.

Narit has arranged telescopes for those interested at its key observation sites in Nakhon Ratchasima, Chachoengsao and Songkhla, and Princess Sirindhorn AstroPark in Chiang Mai.

Narit will also invite students at nearby schools to observe the phenomenon.
