RTAF beefs up border security, adds jets

The government has been closely monitoring the Thai-Myanmar border to guard against any impact spilling over from the neighbouring country's domestic conflict after the incursion of a MiG-29 fighter jet in Tak's Phop Phra district on June 30, according to the Defence Ministry.

In parliament yesterday, Sarawut Phetpanomporn, the Pheu Thai Party's MP for Udon Thani, asked the premier whether Myanmar troops have set foot on Thai territory to fire at ethnic Karen.

He also sought more details on a recent meeting between the Third Army Region and the Myanmar junta.

Deputy Defence Minister Chaichan Changmongkol replied on behalf of the premier, saying the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has beefed up security and has deployed at least two F-16 fighter jets to patrol the border area to prevent any further incursions.

The ministry also submitted a letter of complaint to Myanmar authorities and called for compensation via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) for the intrusion into Thai air space.

The MFA's Department of Southeast Affairs also summoned Myanmar's ambassador to discuss these concerns.

Myanmar is reinforcing four battalions to seize Karen strongholds along the border areas, a source said.
