Mountain B death toll rises to 17

The death toll from last week's blaze at Mountain B pub in Chon Buri province rose to 17 yesterday after a navy squadron leader succumbed to his injuries.

Cdr Phalitdet Soomngern, 40, was pronounced dead at Siriraj Hospital, media reported. He was the leader of Fleet 201 at Wing 2 of the Naval Aviation Division in Rayong province.

His family had earlier sought blood donations to support him during surgery.

Mountain B in Sattahip district caught fire at about 1am last Friday. Fifteen injured people remain in critical condition. Many have extensive burns and are dependent on ventilators.

The death toll climbed to 16 on Wednesday. Of the 55 injured, 29 remain in hospital.

The fire is believed to have broken out in the roof and spread quickly through highly flammable soundproofing material.
