Marriage Equality Bill moving forward

A Marriage Equality Bill is expected to receive its second and third readings later in the year, according to the Move Forward Party (MFP), which is sponsoring the legislation.

The bill, along with three other civil partnership proposals sponsored by the cabinet and the Democrat Party, was approved in principle during the first reading in the middle of June.

The bills are being revised by an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives, said MFP MP Tunyawaj Kamolwongwat, speaking at a panel discussion dubbed "Marriage Equality in Thailand: An Experience from Taiwan", that was organised by Sam Yan Publishing at Chulalongkorn University's Political Science Faculty.

She said the Marriage Equality Bill aims to amend Section 1448 of the Civil and Commercial Code, which limits the definition of marriage to a man and a woman, by making the marriage law applicable to any couple, regardless of gender.

The bills will be submitted to the House for the second and third readings around November and December, she said. After that, the bill will be submitted to the Senate for deliberation.
