Five days of heavy rain predicted

The Meteorological Department is forecasting heavy rain nationwide from Saturday until Wednesday.

Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Anucha Burapachaisri said Thailand will experience heavy rain for five days, especially in the North, Northeast, Central, East, South, and Bangkok, according to the Meteorological Department.

"The public is warned of possible flash floods and overflows which may affect their safety and wellbeing. Fishermen are also advised to take precautions as gusty winds are very likely over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand," said Mr Anucha in his capacity as government spokesman.

Flood-prone areas that need to take extra precautions include places close to rivers and tributaries, especially the Kwai Noi, Pa Sak, Chao Phraya, Chi, Mun, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Bang Pakong, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat rivers, he said.

The government has instructed concerned agencies to monitor flood-prone areas and clear possible obstructions. Hydraulic structures and drainage systems, as well as river banks, must be checked to ensure they remain intact.

"Lowlands for flood retention should be managed and prepared, while personnel and equipment, including backup communication systems, must be mobilised for prompt deployment. Raising public awareness and public relations is also an important measure to prevent grave damage," Mr Anucha said.

The government has assigned the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) to develop and implement a comprehensive water management plan, including 13 specific measures, he added.

The ONWR has adjusted water management criteria, prepared machinery for 5,382 water management centres, and repaired and improved 649 water banks spanning 6,440 kilometres.
