KALASIN: A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in the bushes by a road in Muang district of this northeastern province on Sunday afternoon.

Sittidet Yosthongchai, a member of the rescue unit of tambon Phai, said a villager spotted the baby on the roadside while driving home along the Kalasin-Somdet road.

The villager stopped the car to take a close look and found it was a baby girl who was wrapped only with a white towel. She was still alive and believed to have been dumped shortly after her birth.

He subsequently informed the rescue unit.

Rescuers went to the spot and rushed the baby to Kalasin Hospital.

The baby was now in the care of the hospital, pending police investigation to find the mother and other people who might be involved in the crime.

Mr Sittidet said it was fortunate it was not raining at the time.
