CHON BURI: Chon Buri Football Club goalkeeper Worawut Sukuna has been suspended after being charged with drink-driving causing the death of an elderly woman pedestrian and injuring her companion early Wednesday morning.

A tearful Mr Worawut Sukuna said at Muang Chon Buri police station later on Wednesday that he regretted what happened and swore off alcohol for life.

Police were informed of an accident on a seaside road in tambon Ban Khod in Muang district about 4.30am on Wednesday.

A black Toyota Vios registered in Maha Sarakham province had hit two people out for their morning exercise, at a bridge on the road. The 62-year-old woman had been killed and the man had a broken leg and was rushed to Chon Buri Hospital.

The 23-year-old driver, Mr Worawut, was waiting at the scene.  Thai media reported that a police blood test showed an alcohol level of 184mg%, well above the legal limit.

The Chon Buri Football Club on its Facebook account expressed its condolences to the families of the dead woman, named as Kanya Ponghatban, and the injured man, identified only as Pong.

The club said it would pay full compensation to the victims and their families. It disapproved of Mr Worawat's drink-driving.

The club said Mr Worawut would not play again in the Thai League until the case was finalised.
