Green city projects to be piloted

Three Thai municipal offices have been chosen to pilot the "one province, one sustainable city" project that is expected to be eventually adopted by 600 municipal offices nationwide.

Thalerngsak Phetsuwan, deputy permanent secretary of natural resources and environment, led a high-level meeting to discuss sustainability in local management yesterday.

The conference, organised as a part of the "Smart Green Asean Cities (SGAC)" project, was attended by representatives from the European Union, the United Nations Capital Development Fund, and eight Asean countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Mr Thalerngsak said that the government is now developing its environmental management potential by pushing for the "one province, one sustainable city" project targeting local administrations.

The project involves applying the Bio-Circular Green Economy policy.

According to Mr Thalerngsak, the SGAC sponsors the project and will provide technology and innovation assistance, such as waste management and water management, to the selected municipal offices.

The project will be piloted in Muang Phitsanulok Municipal Office and Muang Nakhon Sawan Municipal Office in the lower North, and Muang Yala Municipal Office in the far South before the project is expanded to at least 600 of the 1,000-plus municipal offices nationwide.

The project is expected to help the government reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065, said Mr Thalerngsak.
