Prince Dipangkorn visits Princess Bajrakitiyabha in hospital

His Royal Highness Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti yesterday visited Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, where she is being treated after losing consciousness due to a heart condition on Dec 14.

The public, staff from state agencies and the private sector continued to turn up at the hospital to write get-well messages to wish the princess a speedy recovery.

His Majesty the King also instructed volunteers under the Jit Arsa (spirit of volunteering) project initiated by the monarch to hand out food and drinking water to the well-wishers as well as people seeking medical services at the hospital.

According to the Bureau of the Royal Household, Princess Bajrakitiyabha passed out while training her pet dogs at 6.20pm in Nakhon Ratchasima's Pak Chong district on Dec 14.

The dogs were being trained as they were slated to take part in the Thailand Working Dog Championship organised by the Royal Thai Army, which ended on Dec 19.

The princess was initially taken to Pak Chong Nana Hospital, where medics administered first aid under the advice of royal physicians.

Once her condition had stabilised, she was airlifted to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, Suttipong Juljarern, permanent secretary of the Interior Ministry, said no order for agencies to cancel New Year events has been issued.

However, all provincial governors have been instructed to come up with safety measures for New Year revellers and tourists, he said.

Quick response units will be deployed to ensure operators of nightlife outlets comply with closing times and the age requirement for entry, he said.

There will also be extra vigilance for knives as weapons at venues. Strict fire safety precautions will also be enforced, he added.

Meanwhile, national police chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas yesterday ordered police units nationwide to cancel their own New Year's Eve activities as a show of respect towards the princess as she is being treated in hospital.

Phuket governor Narong Woonciew said local authorities are still deciding whether to go ahead with New Year fireworks in their area.

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt said yesterday that measures would be drawn up to ensure the safety of revellers in the city and prevent overcrowding. Fireworks display organisers must obtain permission from the district offices first, he said.
