Cambodia envoy bids farewell

PM discusses future bilateral projects

Ouk Sorphorn, Cambodia's ambassador to Thailand, bade farewell to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House yesterday as he is set to return home after completing his term.

They discussed future cooperation especially the opening of the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian–Stung Bot) and the construction of Ban Klong Luk-Poipet Border Railway Station.

Mr Ouk Sorphorn wished Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati a speedy recovery, said government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri.

Mr Anucha said Gen Prayut praised Mr Ouk Sorphorn for his hard work in further improving bilateral ties.

Gen Prayut and Mr Ouk Sorphorn agreed on the need for further cooperation, with the prime minister saying the government would continue to provide support for this.

Mr Anucha said Gen Prayut cited discussions with Hun Sen during this year's Asean summit in Bangkok and expressed his gratitude to the Cambodian prime minister.

According to the discussion, the two nations agreed on opening the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge (Ban Nong Ian–Stung Bot) even though the customs houses are now under construction.

The two countries will also expedite the construction of the Ban Klong Luk-Poipet Border Railway Station, said Gen Prayut.

The discussion with Mr Hun Sen also covered the border's humanitarian de-mining action. They both agreed on not using border planning because it would conflict with any de-mining measures.

Mr Anucha said Gen Prayut urged the ambassador to keep promoting exports and trade, acknowledging Thailand's successful investment in Cambodia.

Thailand is expected to invest US$15 billion in Cambodia by 2025, according to Mr Anucha.

The issue of call-centre scam gangs, the majority of which are based in Cambodia, was also discussed. They agreed on criminal extraditions being accelerated.

Gen Prayut also thanked Cambodia, this year's Asean chair, for its assistance in hosting the Apec 2022 summit in Bangkok and Expo 2028 in Phuket.

He encouraged Mr Ouk Sorphorn to think of Bangkok as his second home, one on which he could rely, and said he hoped the next Cambodian envoy would continue Mr Ouk Sorphorn's work on relationship development.
