Cultural patron dies at 93

Chao Duangduen Na Chiang Mai passed away on Monday due to natural causes. She was 93 years of age. Her relatives will soon announce the dates of the funeral service.

Born on May 22, 1929, Chao Duangduen is the third child of Chao Rachapakinai or Chao Muang Cheun Na Chiang Mai. Her paternal grandparents are Chao Buarawong and Chao Fong Nual of the Na Lamphun and Na Chiang Mai clans.

In 2022, Chao Duangduen was praised by the National Identity Committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam as the patron of Thai religion and culture.

Wallop Namwongprom, vice president of Chiang Mai Culture Council, said in her old age Chao Duangduen had been attended to by her family in Chiang Mai.

After her death, the family sent her body to the Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital.

Mr Wallop said that the council and Chao Duangduen's family had agreed to hold the funeral in the traditional Lanna custom.

The bathing rite and prayers will be organised at Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan in Chiang Mai for seven days during the last week of January.

Later, Chao Duangduen's coffin will be moved to Wat Suan Dok for the traditional Lanna funeral, he added. The date is yet to be confirmed.
