Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has urged Thai nationals to closely monitor news reports and follow a tsunami advisory issued by Japanese authorities following a powerful earthquake off the coast of southern Japan yesterday.
Government spokesman Chai Wacharonke said Mr Srettha is concerned about the safety of Thais after learning about the 7.1 magnitude earthquake. The quake was centred off the eastern coast of Japan's southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30km.
According to Japan's Meteorological Agency, the earthquake struck at about 4.43pm. A tsunami warning was in place for Miyazaki, Kochi, Ehime, Oita and Kagoshima prefectures on the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku.
Mr Chai said that Thai people are advised to follow the advisory of the Japanese authorities until the warning is lifted.
