Volunteer killed in Narathiwat bombing

A defence volunteer was killed when the train station he was guarding in Narathiwat province was bombed yesterday.

Volunteer Fandi Jeh-arong, 31, led eight colleagues to open a gate at Toh Deng train station in tambon Toh Deng sub-district of the Sungai Padi district to receive Train No. 448 from Sungai Kolok district.

An improvised explosive device was planted at the gate and was detonated with a communication radio signal when Fandi was opening it around 6.20am.

The bomb sprayed his body with shrapnel. He was rushed to Sungai Padi Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His eight colleagues were unhurt.

Officials found the bomb was contained in a steel box believed to weigh about 5kg. The bombing delayed train No. 448 heading for Surat Thani province for more than two hours.

In another incident, two soldiers were injured in a bombing in Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat on Saturday night.

The bomb hidden in an oil container was planted in a roadside shelter and was detonated with a radio signal on a road in front of the Isla mosque in Ban Lubokong village of tambon Pasemmat sub-district.

Four soldiers were passing by on a routine patrol around 9pm Saturday when the bomb went off.

Pvt Piyapong Chuchana and Pvt Boonchu Sawangwong sustained shrapnel injuries. They were treated at Sungai Kolok Hospital.

Lt Ekachai Nakchum, who led the patrol, said the bomber intended to attack his group as they went past the spot on their motorcycles at the same time every night.
