Cops gun down man accused of 4 murders

Police on Tuesday killed a man suspected of murdering four people in Ayutthaya last week for drugs and money.

He was shot at a rented bungalow on Malaiman Road in Kamphaeng Saen district of Nakhon Pathom province about 9am.

Itthi Samakrat, 38, of Suphan Buri province’s U Thong district, was shot several times. Three pistols were found beside him in the house.

According to Pol Maj Gen Thawatchai Yingcharoensuk, investigative commander of Provincial Police Region 1, Itthi was one of at least two gunmen who killed four people — two men and two women — in Ayutthaya’s Bang Ban district last week, and was hiding in Nakhon Pathom after the murders.

The four were shot in the back of the head, execution style.

Police learned from one of the victims’ relatives that the gunmen knew the deceased well. One day before they were murdered, they had been counting around 5 million baht in drug money at the house together, the relative claimed.

Pol Maj Gen Thawatchai believes the four murders in Ayutthaya resulted from a conflict arising from the illicit business the victims and Itthi were involved in.

Ayutthaya police chief Pol Maj Gen Sermkid Sitthichaikan said Itthi knew the four victims had a large number of methamphetamine pills and cash and killed them for the drugs and money.

Pol Col Supakorn Chanthrabut, commander of special operation police under Provincial Police Region 1, said detectives tracked Itthi to the rented house in Kamphaeng Saen and attempted to arrest him. When he began to shoot, police returned fire.

According to Pol Col Supakorn, Itthi’s wife and three associates were later discovered at the house.

The pistols found near Itthi’s body may have been used in the Ayutthaya murders, Pol Col Supakorn said. No drugs or money were found at Itthi’s house.
