The Royal Thai Embassy in the Turkish capital on Thursday warned Thai tourists to be extra cautious and avoid rally sites while travelling in Turkey in the wake of the attack on the Thai consulate in Istanbul by nationalist Turks angered at Thailand’s deportation of Uighur refugees to China.
In a message posted on the embassy’s Facebook page, it advised Thai people, especially those visiting Turkey in groups, to be more vigilant while travelling in every city. Tour guides or tour leaders must avoid displaying Thai flags and go around rally venues.
The embassy urged travellers not to take photographs of demonstrators or do anything that attracts attention.
The embassy singled out an incident three days ago in which a group of anti-China Turkish protesters mistook Asian tourists in Istanbul for Chinese and tried to attack them. Police were later able to contain the situation.
The warning followed the attack on the Thai honorary consulate-general in Istanbul early Thursday.
