Phetchaburi fishermen's bodies found

PHETCHABURI — Rescuers have recovered the bodies of two fishermen who went missing after big waves triggered by tropical storm Vamco swamped their boat on Thursday night.

The two men, captain Sarawut Prapan and crewman Prapas Jongsri, along with three others, were sleeping on the 6.5-tonne trawler Petch Pratharn Porn when it capsized in the Gulf of Thailand off Ban Laem district.

The three sailors managed to abandon the ship in time and were found floating on tubes separately by a fishing boat and a marine rescue unit on Friday morning.

Rescuers found the capsized boat about two nautical miles off the fishing community of Laem Phak Bia on Friday but bad weather forced divers to call off their search.

The search continued on Saturday and workers spotted the body of Sarawut floating about 200 metres from the trawler in late morning, while Prapas was found in the craft's engine room.

Survivor Sompob Kochapan, 47, said the vessel had dropped anchor in the sea after it became stuck in shallow water and was caught in heavy rain and strong waves before the mishap.
