NAKHON RATCHASIMA -- Five family members drowned after their fishing boat sank in a waterway in Prathai district on Friday afternoon.

The incident happened at Lam Nam Sataek waterway at Nong Saeng Village Moo 3, said Pol Lt Sunan Mopor, a duty officer at Prathai police station, who was reported around 1pm.

A relative told police that the fishing boat carrying a man, his wife, his two daughters and another girl sank in the waterway when the man was throwing a fishing net to catch fish. All were thrown out from the boat into the waterway, about 2.5 metres deep.

The relative rushed to call neighbours for help. Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene after being alerted. The rescue workers took about 30 minutes to retrieve the bodies of the five victims.

Police believed the boat sank due to heavy weight. The bodies of the victims were sent to Prathai Hospital for post-mortem examination to find the cause of the deaths.
