Chiang Mai MP Sompong Amornwiwat, is tipped to become the new leader of the Pheu Thai Party, and Bangkok MP Anudit Nakhonthap its new secretary-general.

Mr Sompong will be elected as the new party leader and Mr Anudit the new secretary-general, a party source said on Wednesday.

The elections for these two posts and the party's 29 executives are due to take place on July 12.

Outgoing secretary-general, Phumtham Wechayachai, will likely become an adviser to the new party leader and support the party's management team, said the source.

As for key figures such as Sanoh Thienthong, Chalerm Ubumrung and Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, will be given a position in the party, but not executive ones, the source told the Bangkok Post. The move is reported to be an attempt by Pheu Thai to rejuvenate itself by bringing in new faces.

Mr Anudit, 54, is a former Information and Communications Technology (ICT) minister and served in the Royal Thai Air Force as a squadron leader before entering politics.

Mr Sompong said if Mr Anudit is elected party secretary-general, Pheu Thai will likely free itself from internal conflicts because Mr Anudit has the ability to get all people in the party to work well together.

The prospective new leader also said the 29 new party executives will all be real players, not merely somebody's political nominee.

Prayut Siripanich, a senior Pheu Thai figure, who on Tuesday chaired a meeting of party MPs from the Northeast, yesterday dismissed rumours that certain MPs from the region didn't support Mr Anudit.

He said none of the northeastern MPs at Tuesday's meeting disagreed with Mr Anudit becoming the party's secretary-general. The rumours were aimed at creating party divisions, he said.
