New govt offers 'little change'

A poll carried out by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, or Suan Dusit Poll, found that a slight majority of people it surveyed found no difference between the government installed by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and the current government in terms of overall performance.

The poll was carried out on Oct 1-5 among 1,233 people across Thailand.

When asked to compare the overall performance of the first and second Prayut cabinet, 51.7% of respondents said they see no difference because both are run by the same people who are simply continuing with the policies they had set during their first tenure.

Meanwhile, about 41.7% said the second Prayut government is faring worse due to its inability to mitigate the impact of the global economic downturn. Only 6.6% said the second Prayut government is doing a better job than the first government because it introduced schemes such as the state welfare cards and the Chim-Shop-Chai, or "eat-shop-spend" scheme.

When asked to cite good things the second government has done, 49% chose its economic stimulus programmes; 43.78% cited its ability to keep the country under control; and 30.67% cited its investments in infrastructure projects.
