Other parties can grill Prawit, but at their own risk: Chalerm

Pheu Thai Party heavyweight Chalerm Ubamrung says other opposition parties can censure Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon in the upcoming no-confidence debate if they want, but it will be at their own risk.

He said the main opposition party, Pheu Thai, has decided not to grill Gen Prawit because the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) had cleared Gen Prawit of concealing assets in the luxury watch scandal, and there is no evidence in relation to other alleged misconduct or wrongdoing.

"'We will not object if other opposition parties find fresh evidence and want to grill him [Gen Prawit]. But be warned. You can be in trouble if the NACC sues you for libel," warned Mr Chalerm, who is in charge of Pheu Thai Party's special affairs committee.

Also yesterday, Mr Chalerm dismissed claims that Pheu Thai was being lobbied to spare Gen Prawit from the no-confidence motion, saying the debate targets still stand at five: Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, his deputies Wissanu Krea-ngam and Somkid Jatusripitak, Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai.

Pheu Thai secretary-general Anudith Nakornthap said the no-confidence motion will be submitted to the House Speaker this week.

More cabinet ministers may be added to the list of censure targets if there is enough evidence against them, he said.

Gp Capt Anudith also brushed aside rumours that Pheu Thai was in talks with the ruling Palang Pracharath Party to join the coalition.

Pheu Thai stands by its election pledge that it will never support Gen Prayut staying on in power, he said.
