Graft panel qualifications in crosshairs

The qualifications of certain members of the House standing committee on corruption have come under fire, raising the question of whether they are fit to continue in the role, according to the Anti-Corruption Organisation of Thailand (ACT).

In a statement released yesterday, the ACT said there were doubts about the qualifications, track records and conduct of certain committee appointees. It did not name any names.

"Political parties should ensure that the people representing them on the panel are capable, mature and socially acceptable with a clean sheet," the statement said.

It added that the committee members should be genuinely dedicated to the job of tackling corruption, and should attach importance to upholding good governance and respecting the rules.

The committee has been beset by infighting, most notably involving chairman Pol Gen Sereepisuth Temeeyaves and member Pareena Kraikupt. The two have been involved in spats over a range of issues, including an order signed by Pol Gen Sereepisuth demanding that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha explain in person his blunder in delivering the oath of office.

Ms Pareena, a four-time MP, has also been embroiled in the land-encroachment case in Ratchaburi, her constituency.
