Court grants 'Rung' bail after 2 months

The Criminal Court yesterday approved a bail request for protest leader Panusaya "Rung" Sitthijirawattanakul on the condition that she does not get involved in activities tarnishing the reputation of the monarchy.

Ms Panusaya's mother put up a bond of 200,000 baht and acted as her guarantor.

The court approved the bail request with three conditions: she must not tarnish the name of the institution, take part in activities that could create unrest; or leave the country without a court permit. Ms Panusaya must also report to the court as scheduled.

She was detained for 59 days and was on a hunger strike for 38 days demanding bail for all political detainees.

The court yesterday was initially scheduled to hear a bail request for protest leaders Parit "Penguin" Chiwarak and Chai-amorn "Ammy The Bottom Blues" Kaewwiboonpan but the pair did not complete their 14-day quarantine.

Mr Parit and Mr Chai-amorn reportedly shared a room with anti-government protester Chukiat "Justin" Sangwong, who was found to be infected with Covid-19 on April 24.

Mr Parit and Ms Panusaya were charged with lese majeste after leading a mass protest at Thammasat University and the nearby Sanam Luang last year.

Mr Chai-amorn was detained after he was charged with lese majeste, an indictment stemming from his alleged participation in mass protests and the torching of a royal photo in front of Bangkok Remand Prison.

Meanwhile, protest leader Arnon Nampa has contracted the coronavirus while in custody, according to the Department of Corrections.

Thawatchai Chaiwat, deputy director-general of the department, said Mr Arnon tested positive for the virus on May 5 and it was possible that he contracted it from Mr Chukiat.

He said another inmate also tested positive and both were admitted for Covid-19 treatment. Mr Arnon tested negative in his first screening, Mr Thawatchai said.

He said Mr Parit was released from Ramathibodi Hospital yesterday after receiving treatment for issues related to his hunger strike.
