Ruling PPRP aims to win 150 House seats

The ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) aims to win at least 150 House seats in the next general election, according to party secretary-general Santi Promphat.

Speaking after the party's general meeting, chaired by party leader Prawit Wongsuwon in Nakhon Ratchasima, Mr Santi said Gen Prawit has set a goal of capturing 150 seats.

The party will now coordinate closely with its members in all constituencies and chiefs of 10 regional offices so they can convey the party's policies to the public, he said.

He expressed confidence the PPRP can achieve the goal while dismissing the Pheu Thai Party's claim that it would score a landslide victory in the next poll.

"I think [Pheu Thai] winning a landslide victory is just a dream. The most important thing is our actions and we will turn the PPRP into a channel for the people's hopes," he said when asked about the Pheu Thai Party's claim.

At the general meeting, Mr Santi was also confirmed as PPRP's secretary-general after serving in the acting capacity following the expulsion of Capt Thamanat Prompow in January.

Meanwhile, Piraphan Salirathavibhaaga, a PPRP member and an adviser to the prime minister, said he will hand in his resignation today from the PPRP to the party and the Office of Election Commission.

He said it is time for him to leave because he has completed his task of restructuring the party. However, he said he has yet to decide on the future of his political career.

At the meeting, Gen Prawit vowed to strengthen the PPRP and make it a political institution able to serve on behalf of the country's interest. He said the party will formulate policy platforms based on people's needs and focus on agricultural development.

Four new executive committee members were also elected: Gen Krisyothin Sasipattanawong, former staff officer to Gen Prawit; Gen Thanya Kiatisarn, former commander of the 2nd Army; and party-list MPs Wichian Chawalit and Pornchai Trakoonvaranond.

The PPRP also appointed Mr Santi and Gen Thanya, among others, to a panel tasked with selecting potential election candidates.
