Witthaya: Quit to show responsibility

Former Democrat deputy leader Witthaya Kaewparadai resigned from the party yesterday and demanded its executive committee show political responsibility for the sexual misconduct accusations against Prinn Panitchpakdi.

He said the scandal had damaged the party's reputation and he hoped its executives would do more to maintain high ethical standards as it was responsible for recruiting Mr Prinn, also a former deputy leader, who has resigned in the wake of the claims.

When asked if he meant the party executives should step down, the former MP for Nakhon Si Thammarat said they should consider emulating his move.

He insisted his exit was unrelated to rumours the party may not support him to run in the next election, saying he had yet to decide which party to join so the matter was not relevant.

Mr Jurin this week resigned as head of two government panels on women and gender policies under pressure from rights activists.

Meanwhile, Sittra Biebangkerd petitioned the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) on Friday urging an investigation into allegations of interference in the first case against Mr Prinn.

In his petition, the celebrity lawyer asked Pol Lt Gen Samran Nualma to look into whether a police major general had tried to influence Mr Prinn's first accuser as well as the woman's mother.

Mr Sittra asked the MPB chief to check a phone number used to call the mother and find out who was behind it, and whether the person was linked to any political party.

He suspects the caller is a former police official who the accuser referred to as "uncle" despite them being unrelated.

Mr Sittra said the accuser had been in touch with the major general since the day she was allegedly sexually harassed, but she had since stopped communicating with him.

Pol Maj Gen Trairong Piwpan, deputy commissioner of the MPB, said he believes this was a misunderstanding.

The person suspected of attempting to influence the mother and daughter was a retired official whom the pair have known for some time, he said.
