Chadchart offered convicts to clear drains

The Corrections Department has been instructed to write to Bangkok governor-elect Chadchart Sittipunt and seek his permission to use convicts to clean out sewers and reduce the risk of flooding in the capital.

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said he issued the instruction after the previous governor, Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang, refused permission for convicts to do the work.

The minister said the department was ready to serve the community, and it would also be instructional for the prisoners prior to their release.

City Hall will be charged for the work, Mr Somsak said. He hoped Mr Chadchart would agree to the offer.

"I believe he will, because Bangkok is prone to flooding during the rainy season," he said.
