Prayut focused on floods, not term limit controversy

RAYONG: Suspended prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said he is not concerned right now about how the Constitutional Court will rule on his eight-year tenure as premier but is focused on performing his other duties to the best of his ability.

"There is nothing to worry about. As defence minister, I am more concerned about the plight of people [suffering from floods]," he told the media during an inspection trip to this eastern province yesterday.

Gen Prayut led officials to inspect the flood situation in tambon Tabma in Muang district and visited local residents affected by the floods. He was accompanied by Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin and Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha.

It was the second time he has made an upcountry inspection trip in his capacity as defence minister since he was suspended as PM. He made the first to Ayutthaya on Sept 2.

Gen Prayut was briefed on the flood situation that has affected 15,000 local villagers, as well as relief measures and flood management operations.

According to local officials, flood waters were starting to recede, with some flooding remaining in certain areas. The situation should return to normal in the next few days unless more heavy rain hits the region.

Gen Prayut praised all parties involved for their efforts to counter flooding and ease the woes of affected residents.

He also urged both agencies and local residents across the country to prepare for further flooding predicted for next month.

"Everyone must be prepared for next month. The government also has put in place plans for sustainable water management. As defence minister, I will do my best to help," Gen Prayut said.

The Constitutional Court has set Sept 30 for its ruling on his tenure limit as PM.

On Aug 24, the court voted 5-4 to suspend Gen Prayut until it hands down its ruling. He retains his role and duties as defence minister, however.

The suspension order followed the court's unanimous decision to accept the opposition's petition to that effect.

Protest leader Jatuporn Prompan said on Friday a rally will be held at Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok on Sept 30 when the court hands down the ruling.
