The Pheu Thai Party has no case to initiate a process to expel party stalwart and list-MP Pol Capt Chalerm Ubumrung, according to party secretary-general Sorawong Thienthong.

Mr Sorawong was responding to Pol Capt Chalerm's remark that he wished to be expelled by the party so that he would be free to join the Palang Prarachrath Party (PPRP) like his son, Wan, who resigned from Pheu Thai early last week. Mr Wan resigned after he upset the party's management for fraternising with a party rival in a recent election in Pathum Thani.

Mr Sorawrong said on Sunday the party cannot expel a member unless the individual is found to have breached the party's rules by an ethics committee. "In Pol Capt Chalerm's case, there is nothing breach. He is a valuable person and the party has no intention to lose him," he said.

As an MP, if Pol Capt Chalerm resigns from the party, he will lose his parliamentary status. If expelled, he can retain the status by finding a new party within the deadline allowed by law.

Mr Sorawong said the party respects Mr Wan's decision to leave the party and wishes him well, adding that another member of Ubamrung family, Archawin, remains with Pheu Thai.

On Facebook Live, Mr Wan denied reports that his son, Mr Archawin, would join him and Pol Capt Chalerm in moving to the PPRP.

He said Mr Archawin is still a Pheu Thai member and works as an adviser to Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong. Mr Wan said he will apply for membership with the PPRP tomorrow while his father is waiting for a party process to "impeach" him.

"My son is 27 [years old]. Let him decide his own career path. Things about a father, grandfather and nephew should be taken separately," he said.
