Anti-government protesters are planning to make a clean sweep of Bangkok - with brooms and dust bins.

After toning down their street protests to oust caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra during the long holidays, the People’s Democratic Reform Committee on Sunday announced a new mission - to clean up the streets around its rally sites at the Democracy Monument.

The campaign will be launched on Monday and last until Wednesday, PDRC spokesman Akanat Promphan said.

The targets for the PDRC and its ally, the Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand, are all roads around the monument, Wat Sommanas Woravihara and Wat Makut Kasattariyaram.

The sweeping mission is one of several activities during the New Year, including a chanting ceremony on the night of Dec 31 through the early hours of Jan 1, to be followed by an alms offering for monks to celebrate the new year.

Mr Akanat said security will be provided for attendants to guarantee no violence on those days.

Many protesters have been heading home during the break and protester leader Suthep Thaugsuban has said they would return for more relentless protests in January.
