Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park Hosts “Fair Trade Market” to Showcase the Ethnic Arts and Crafts of Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand, 31 October 2019 - Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park is preparing to host a unique event that will showcase the colorful arts and classical crafts of Thailand’s ethnic communities.

In partnership with Lofty Bamboo, a responsible company which is certified by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), the hotel will stage the “Fair Trade Market at Marriott Marquis” from 15-17 November 2019, giving guests and local residents the chance to purchase a wide variety of products, handmade by indigenous people in remote regions of Thailand.

The market will feature a total of 15 stalls selling original products crafted using age-old methods and native materials, including clothing, silks, dyed fabrics, bags, silverwork, jewelry, woven baskets, sandals, accessories, beads and much more. The hotel’s own authentic Thai restaurant, Siam Tea Room, will also be serving cuisine using time-honored recipes.

This enchanting occasion will help to shine a spotlight on the rich culture and intricate workmanship of Thailand’s hilltribes, including the Lisu and Karen, which have resided in the mountainous border regions of northern and western Thailand for centuries. By creating a supply chain for their products to be promoted and purchased, Lofty Bamboo is harnessing skills that have been passed down through generations, helping to keep ancient traditions alive.

The principles of fair trade will also help to generate much-needed income for these underprivileged areas of society, improving living standards and lifting families out of poverty. Some of the suppliers, such as Baan Nong Ling Weaving Group and Wipawadi Beads Accessory Group, specialize in providing employment for ethic women.

“We are delighted to join forces with Lofty Bamboo to host the inaugural Fair Trade Market at Marriott Marquis. This event will offer a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the culture of Thailand’s indigenous groups. In line with Marriott International’s global CSR program, ‘Serve360: Doing Good in Every Direction,’ we strive to make a difference to local people everywhere we operate. This vibrant marketplace will generate additional revenue for Thailand’s hilltribes, while also raising awareness of their rich culture and creating long-term benefits for these captivating communities,” said Simon Bell, General Manager, Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park.

The Fair Trade Market at Marriott Marquis will take place from 10.00 – 20.00 hrs. on 15 - 17 November 2019, at the lobby level of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park.
