Empowering the young generation in ASEAN to take a stand against cybercrime
The TIJ (Thailand Institute of Justice) Youth Forum that took place in Bangkok from February 25-29, 2020, saw young representatives from across South Asia given the opportunity to encounter new perspectives for developing out-of-the box solutions to counter cybercrime and overcome emerging challenges. The platform aims at promoting regional dialogue and finding solutions through design thinking in order to achieve holistic and sustainable outcomes.
Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Advisor to TIJ, said, “On the occasion of Thailand’s ASEAN chairmanship, TIJ hosted the 2nd Asean Conference on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, ACCPCJ, which emphasised issues related to crime prevention and criminal justice, key challenges in justice systems and rule of law in ASEAN going forward.”
He continued that: “In promoting ASEAN integration, the cooperation of all sectors of a community, including youth, play vital roles in achieving holistic and sustainable outcomes. As such, TIJ Youth Forum on Justice and the Rule of Law was organised in parallel with the 2nd ACCPCJ in an effort to empower and connect the young generation around the region, providing a platform for discussion and conversation on cybercrime and related issues. The areas of focus in the Youth Forum are in line with the ASEAN Declaration on Culture of Prevention for a Peaceful, Resilient, Healthy and Harmonious Society. The cross-pillar coordination among ASEAN members is absolutely necessary to comply with the ASEAN pillars – politics and security, economy and society and culture.”
“This generation of young people is well-equipped with digital skills that enable access to information from several sources, including the social media. Benefiting from such skills, the forum could serve to give rise to innovative solutions with a view to addressing such challenges. Through creative problem-solving approaches and enhanced collaboration, the Youth Forum will further serve to inspire passion and foster coordination in the complex task of promoting innovative justice for all.”
TIJ Youth Forum workshops adopted designer thinking methods aiming to ground youth participants with innovative tools by which they can evaluate current situations and craft the future of justice, leading to effective, thorough and sustainable solutions.
The TIJ Youth Forum also expects to continue expanding the collaborative capacity of youths in the ASEAN region on a continual basis. This, in turn will enable development of sustainable solutions, promote cross-generational dialogues and foster unity in diversity, especially among different races, religious groups, cultures and linguistics through open-dialogue.
Post-conference, TIJ compiled a report on the 2nd ACCPCJ including a comprehensive summary of the outcomes and agreements reached at the Conference. The Youth Forum has its
own designated section in the report, including a synopsis of each team’s key recommendations.
