BMA approves supplementary budget for fiscal year 2020

On 15 July 2020, Mr. Nirunde Praditkul, Chairman of Bangkok Metropolitan Council, chaired a sitting of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC).

The meeting considered the draft BMA Ordinance on Supplementary Appropriations of Fiscal Year 2020 (No. ...), B.E. … This budget is to be utilised by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to find solutions for various problems facing the people, involving public works and traffic systems, education, drainage, sewerage and flooding, public health, and safety in life and property. Budget utilization will be in the form of programme and project implementation under the responsibility of the BMA’s 10 departments and 14 district offices, totaling 2,570,061,601 baht.

The BMC made several observations about the BMA budget, for example, in terms of public works. It was recommended that when road construction and improvement projects are completed, measures should be in place to strictly prohibit overloaded trucks or vehicles from using the road as it causes extensive damage to road surfaces, necessitating the BMA to use substantial budget for repair works. It was further recommended that with regard to medical services, procurement of medical supplies should not only consider the lowest price but also take into consideration the quality and optimal use of the medical supplies. Regarding the environment, the development of a service charge management system should emphasise implementation of technologies, applications, and varieties of communication channels in place of human resources with respect to invoicing and collecting service charges. It was pointed out that this would help reduce the problem of leakage and shortage of manpower.
