SACICT shows potential of Thai newly-designed crafts at Crafts Bangkok 2020

Generating income for crafts people, connecting Thai communities, and driving local economies

The SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Center of Thailand (Public Organisation) (SACICT) is organising “Craft Bangkok 2020” with a mission to help revive Thai craft operators in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Taking place from 3-6 September 2020, at BITEC Bangna, the grand event features contemporary crafts noted for their design and creativity qualities.

“SACICT is an entity under the supervision of the Commerce Ministry with a mission to implement the royal determination of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother with respect to local arts and crafts,” explains Pornpon Akathaporn, Chief Executive Officer of SACICT. “Thai values are therefore reflected through the arts and crafts in ways that make them commercially viable and bring them broad recognition while also elevating the wellbeing of the crafts people and their communities.”

“A New Handicraft Arts Culture Under Royal Patronage” held by SACICT last August generated funds amounting to 71 million baht, exceeding its target.

To further stimulate purchases of crafts so as to spread income that can alleviate suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic, SACICT now presents the third consecutive annual event in this series, dubbed “Crafts Bangkok 2020”.

As previously the event is intended to stimulate upgrading of product quality and sharpen creative and craft skills in ways that capture the imaginations of the international community. The craft items are universally suited to modern life, whether for decoration or use in daily life.

“Crafts Bangkok 2020” gathers a large number of craft products from all over the country. It thereby strengthens Thai wisdom and increases the value of Thai crafts blended with creative ideas to be compatible with modern living while also being uniquely beautiful.

Products from the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, the Royal Initiative Project Center, the Ceramic Project of Chulabhorn Research Institute, the Kamlangjai Project, Mae Fa Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, and master artisans of Thailand, master craftsmen, and heritage artisans as well as SACICT members are all represented at over 380 booths.

The event is also a learning resource for Thai arts and crafts. Many of the items have been developed from upstream to downstream. For instance Thai textiles designs by the new generation.

There will also be a discussion forum led by Top Pipat Apirakthanakorn on the topic of “Eco Craft Products” focussing on natural materials.

There will also be several promotions at the event. When you spend 1,500 baht buying crafts at the exhibition, you are entitled to register for workshops led by leading Thai artisans and SACICT members. Subjects include embroidered tote bags, leather key ring fobs, krajood weaving, leather masks, wooden key ring fobs, ceramic painting, clay moulding, handmade embroidery, polymer clay moulding, miniature terrarium, aroma flower balls, and mobile home decorations.

SACICT also provides entertainment activities on the opening day, including a meeting with Taew Nataporn and Son Yuk. Visitors can enjoy a mini concert featuring Kan Napatr Injai-ua, Kam Vichayanee Piaklin, Earth Patravee Srisantisuk, and more.

Plus Khon Ramakien, Maiyarap Performance presented by Art Association for Youth, Ministry of Culture.

“Crafts Bangkok 2020 is going to be a big event that everyone who likes crafts must attend. It’s going to be a wonderful opportunity for people to directly experience how crafts are created so people can learn and take up craft-making themselves. And it’s going to be a terrific way of bringing the craft community all over Thailand together,” concluded Pornpon Akathaporn, Chief Executive Officer of SACICT.

“Crafts Bangkok 2020” is coming up on 3-6 September 2020, 10.00 – 20.00 hours at Hall 98 and 99, BITEC Exhibition and Convention Center.
