BMA’s solution on flood problem in Bangkok

Flood problem in Bangkok can be occurred in many areas owing to:

• The increasing number of large buildings that discharged a large volume of wastewater;

• The increase of the size of drain pipe or additional network of drain pipes which is uneasy to make it compatible with the draining of water;

• The surfaces that are mostly changed from soil to concrete;

• Physical characteristics of Bangkok which is a low-lying terrain similar to a basin; and

• The ongoing sinking or land subsidence, year by year, that is threatening the city.

The BMA mobilizes all resources to earnestly find solutions to this problem to the utmost with its resolute officers and personnel in all work departments. This includes:

• Garbage collectors

• Officers who open and close the water/flood gates

• Officers stationed at water pumping stations who control the pumping of water from moats and canals to prevent the main roads from flood

• Officers who take care of plants and trees and protect them from falling which may affect the pumping of water

• Officers of the Bangkok Emergency Service Team or BEST Unit at all 50 districts of Bangkok

The BMA brings in innovations and technology to systematically assist the water management with the drainage capacity of 195 cubic meters per second using the following facilities:

• 4 giant drainage tunnels

• Water diversion system project at Prem Prachakorn Canal

• Makkasan Swamp

• Saen Saep Canal

• Bang Sue Canal

Together with other 5 places covering both Thon Buri and Phra Nakhon sides of Bangkok:

• Nong Bon Swamp to Chao Phraya River

• Prem Prachakorn Canal, from Bang Bua to Chao Phraya River

• Saen Saep Canal

• Thawi Watthana Canal

• Phraya Ratchamontri Canal

Moreover, the BMA has enhanced the existing innovations such as drainage system on the main roads (Pipe Jacking); Water Bank , also known as “Monkey Cheek” water retention areas, both on the ground and underground; two weather radar stations at Nong Khaem and Nong Chok districts that forecast the direction and amount of rainfall in order to be prepared, monitor, and plan for rainwater management.

Despite having the “Giant Tunnels”, Bangkok will still face with flood problem if the people do not stop the bad old habit.

“Garbage”, both small and large, as well as grease and oil from cooking that clogged the drain pipes create the never-ending problem to water pumps and obstruct the watercourse. With just a little help from everyone, we can solve flood problem in Bangkok. Put your waste in the right place, separate your waste in the right bin.
