Gu Mingjin, President of the Taiwan Chinese Medical Association, said that amid the escalating worldwide COVID-19 epidemic, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has strengthened its regulatory standards and ensures confidence on safety of traditional Chinese medicine exports to ASEAN countries.

Previously, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has issued several notices to revise information related to traditional Chinese medicine pharmaceutical products and to ensure an increased quality of the products for the safety of public health, especially for products focused on treating the COVID-19.

Taiwan foresees high demands for Traditional Chinese medicine and medical products, particularly within ASEAN countries. In countries such as Thailand and Malaysia, there is a large population of Chinese people residing there that are familiar with traditional Chinese medicine and uses it to treat diseases.  They create a good user base for expanding the knowledge on traditional Chinese medicines and its beneficial usage. More importantly, Thais and Malaysians have high purchasing power of health products and services.

Dr. Wang Baoguo, President of the Malaysia Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said that presently, the development of Chinese herbal medicine has made great progress.  Due to their ease of usage and availability in modern packaging, consumers now uses traditional Chinese medicine in conjunction with modern medicine as well. This practice can effectively improve treatments.

Dr. Ho Juansheng, Vice President of Thailand Chinese Medical Association, said that traditional Chinese medicine is increasing in popularity. It’s becoming an important option to treat diseases.  It has been accepted and practiced for over 5,000 years. We need to continue to build awareness, knowledge, and confidence in Thai consumers to become more open-minded to new treatment methods.

Another important factor is to create public awareness on legal knowledge and import techniques of traditional Chinese medicine. There are some differences, such as differences in safety standards level requirements as this is according to each country’s laws, and the differences in the amount of leftover residues. These factors greatly affect the import and export of Chinese medicine for each country.
