MEA warns against scammers with fake electricity services and equipment

The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), led by Jumpote Himacharoen, Corporate Communications Director, has issued a warning against scammers who pretend to be MEA agents in order to commit fraud by selling fake electricity services such as air conditioner cleaning and forging electricity bills, cut-off notifications and meter installations.

Jumpote explained, “Fake equipment cannot help reduce electricity consumption and might cause damage to the electricity system, which is a crime. MEA is investigating the issue and preparing to take legal action against the scammers.”

MEA insists that there are no MEA agents who receive bill payments, meter replacement fees or charges for equipment inspection. The only occasion where MEA would provide offsite services is a special event or project with local communities. MEA will always publicise its activities in advance through its official platforms and mass media.

Tips for saving energy include turning on electrical equipment only when needed; keeping air conditioner temperatures to 26 degrees Celsius; switching to air conditioners with high efficiency, and; ensuring air conditioners are cleaned at least twice a year.

Besides not over stocking refrigerators, it is also important to limit how often the door is opened and closed, use ice flasks to keep drinking water chilled, and check the rubber door seals of the appliance are in good working order.

Choosing LED bulbs and energy-saving devices (No. 5) is another smart way to keep costs down. It is also advisable to use electrical equipment carefully to prevent short circuits, and to check appliances, gadgets and electrical fittings regularly to make sure they are always in good condition. If damaged, equipment must be repaired immediately. And don’t forget to install ground wires and circuit breakers.

MEA customers can easily see their electricity usage and calculate bills via the MEA Smart Life application, available from the App Store and Google Play as well as at http://onelink.to/measmartlife.

You can add LINE MEA Connect at https://lin.ee/gX2zNRl. All MEA services can be accessed quickly and conveniently online 24 hours a day.

Now MEA provides even greater connectivity for customers by creating dedicated LINE accounts for each local MEA office.
