Brighton College Bangkok selected to host FOBISIA’s 2021 Teaching Community eConference promoting ‘a love of learning’

Brighton College Bangkok is delighted to have been selected to host FOBISIA’s Teaching Community eConference this year. More than 1,700 teachers and education professionals from over 50 Schools attended the conference. They came from British international schools across Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, China, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Japan, India, Philippines and Mongolia, to hear keynote speakers and global experts in the field of education.

This successful event was organised as a joint venture between FOBISIA and a team of teachers from Brighton College Bangkok led by Emma-Marie Horridge, Deputy Head of the Preparatory School, who was recently named as an Outstanding Teacher in the Oxford AQA Awards.

With a focus on evidence-based teaching and learning, the conference gave Brighton’s outstanding teachers and TLAs a chance to boost their own CPD (continuous professional development) as well as supporting others.

We were delighted to welcome keynote speaker, Kate Jones, the author of six books on education, including the Retrieval Practice collection, and writing regularly for the TES. Her talk was on Assessment For Learning, an area that our Brighton teachers value greatly.

Another keynote speaker, Alex Quigley, is a former teacher who now works for the Education Endowment Foundation. He writes edubooks and is a columnist for the TES and Teach Secondary magazine. His talk was about Closing the Literary Gap, a challenge we are successfully managing ourselves.

Our final keynote speaker for the event was Professor John Hattie, an award-winning education researcher and best-selling author with over 40 years of experience examining what works best in student learning and achievement. Over the years, he has authored over 38 books, and keynoted at more than 350 conferences. It is no wonder that Professor Hattie was once called “possibly the world’s most influential education academic” by the Times Educational Supplement. Currently, he is Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne, and Chair of the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leaders.

At Brighton College Bangkok our core values are curiosity, confidence and kindness, and these are not traits that we believe apply only to our pupils. Emma-Marie Horridge, our Deputy Head of Preparatory School and lead organiser alongside our colleagues at FOBISIA, was excited that this allowed our Brighton College teachers the opportunity to fully embrace their professional curiosity and be role models to our pupils, as they demonstrated that learning is a lifelong pursuit.  She was excited to see how our teachers were inspired by the high quality speakers and our teachers are now applying the lessons learned.

The Head Master of Brighton College Bangkok, Mike Walton, was delighted to welcome all delegates at the start of the conference. Whilst sorry not to be welcoming them in person, he noted the advantages of such an e-conference. These include the larger number of participants able to join and the ability to include such an impressive range of speakers. At the end he was able to thank all contributors, with a special mention for his own staff for hosting the event so professionally.

Feedback for the event was extremely positive, and for that we thank the team at FOBISIA and all of our guest speakers for their support. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.
