Samsung Engineering delivers innovation to GC by surpassing conventional EPC methods

On 9 January 2022, PTT Global Chemical Plc (GC), Thailand's largest petrochemical producer, together with Samsung Engineering Consortium (SEC), held the ‘C3 Splitter Anointing Ceremony’ for the Olefins 2 Modification Project (OMP). SEC consists of Samsung Engineering Co., LTD., one of the world’s leading engineering, procurement, construction and project management (EPC&PM) companies and Samsung Engineering Thailand Co., LTD. The C3 Splitter is a major equipment for OMP and the highest distillation tower reaching more than 100 meters. The contract signing ceremony for the whole project was held on 10 February 2021.

With the ‘C3 Splitter Anointing Ceremony’ OMP highlights the remarkable collaboration between GC and Samsung Engineering, emphasising the endeavors of Samsung to deliver an innovative solution and changing the means to execute engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects by implementing concept of S-PEpC. The S stands for Samsung, while the first capital P in front of EpC refer to procurement works having been done prior to the EPC stage, which requires the collaborative pre-actions with the project owner, and the “p” illustrates the minority of procurement works remaining during project execution.

The S-PEpC concept was developed to  maximise items for strategic collaboration with vendors; utilise standard model package design built with vendors; and the early freeze of engineering works in the initial stages of projects.

Samsung Engineering, with the application of S-PEpC, has successfully surpassed the conventional EPC project execution by shortening the deliverable time of the long lead item of OMP – the C3 Splitter – for 3 months, which enables GC to optimise their schedule for completion.

This achievement aligns with Samsung Engineering’s vision to stay ahead of the mainstream with in-house innovations created to solve chronic problems owners face during EPC projects, including delays and going over budget, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
