Thai artist 'ROM' debuts first solo exhibition 'REBORN' in seoul

AIMING TO ACTIVATE HIS WORK AND AGENCY IN GLOBAL CREATIVE, ART AND FASHION MARKETS

Rom Sangkavatana, a Thai creative director and artist whose work has been featured on various international stages, has now debuted his first solo exhibition, REBORN, in Seoul, South Korea. Telling a love story through photographs and music through time and the changing definition of beauty, his work sparked a conversation about Seoul and its emerging role as a new capital of art, design, fashion and entertainment in Asia amid the global rise of K-Pop and K-Drama trends.

In his debut exhibition, ROM mesmerised viewers with the new definition of beauty that evolves over time and is transmitted from east to west in the eyes of international audiences. Launched on 15 October 2022, the exhibition welcomed celebrities and influential figures in the Korean art and entertainment industry, including Kwon Kim (Actor), Joon Woo Jo (Fashion Director), Won Jae Lee (Designer, 51percent), Cho Soo Yeon (Model), Moquee Nyanya Joon (Fashion Stylist), Simon Bureau (CEO, Vectis Corporation), Woosung Kang (Owner, New Ampersand Publishing), Soohyo Kim (Artist), and Ji Soo Yim (Owner, The Klub).

In his first solo exhibition, ROM asserted his position as a pioneer among young, innovative Thai artists, inviting them to present their work more frequently in the hub of global entertainment, arts and fashion. He collaborated with Ten Pannatat, a young and enthusiastic Thai photographer, to convey the narrative using the idea of "the rebirth of love," which tells the tale of love in multiple dimensions and reflects time in the digital era. With his enormous experience from studying at three of the top ten universities in the world, namely, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University College London and Central Saint Martins, in addition to his role as a consultant for premium Thai brands such as Gems Pavilion, GQ Thailand, King Power, One Nimmam and Arabica Thailand via ROM DESIGN, a branding and design firm with offices in Thailand and London, UK, Rom brings to the table a multi-dimensional and complex interpretation of what is and what will be. He was recognised as "an exceptional and courageous leader of the current Thai creative industry" by Superfuture, a renowned international media outlet from Australia and the Netherlands.

Choosing Seoul as launch destination mirrors the message that ROM wants to convey through the work; the rise of Seoul as a new capital of art, creativity, entertainment and fashion. With Chanel and Christian Dior already invested in South Korea with flagship stores in Seoul, South Korea soars as a new hub of Asia and the world. As K-Pop and K-Drama are trending all over the world, it is important not to forget the role of Thai Talents behind these trends such as Nickhun 2PM, BamBam GOT7, Ten NTC, Minnie (G) I-DLE, Natty (Twice) and Lisa Blackpink, the superstar who spearheaded K- Pop into the western market and the face of the world-class French brand, Celine.

This exhibition also marks a collaboration between the Korean partner (MaKim's Paso Gallery, Min Sung Kim) and Thai partner (ROM's creative hub in central Bangkok, TOWNHOUSE Space) to establish an import and export business that simultaneously markets art and fashion to the international market with the aim of sparking "exclusive communities" between the two nations.
