The medical sector is one of the new S-curve industries targeted to spur the country’s economic development.
In this respect, the country needs to develop its capacity to manufacture medical devices; promote the development and application of modern medical technologies to improve the quality of life of the people; and employ digital technology in medical services to lower costs of treatment and enhance the quality of medical services to international level. Moreover, the recent COVID-19 outbreak has emphasised the importance of the country’s security and self-reliance on advanced medical technologies, for which Thailand has long relied on imports and foreign experts.
From the societal perspective, with the increasing proportion of elderly people and declining proportions of children and working age population, many countries have entered the ageing society. Population ageing poses challenges to the healthcare sector in various aspects. First, advanced medical technologies and high-quality medical services will be increasingly required to ensure the well-being and quality of life of the population. Second, due to the declining workforce, digital technology will be indispensable to ensure high efficiency and cost effectiveness of medical industries and services. Lastly, since population ageing is not only encountered in Thailand but across the world, and together with the rising trend of globalization, international migration of skilled persons will be increasing, including those working in the healthcare sector.
In addition to population aging, continuous technological disruption seen in the past decade has emphasized the need for graduates to be resilient to rapid technological changes and to recognise the importance of lifelong learning. And since medical technologies and services are multidisciplinary by nature, social skills in terms of communication and collaboration are required for graduates, who will be the workforce in these fields.
Considering economic, social and technological circumstances, Princess Srisavangavadhana College of Medicine, Chulabhorn Royal Academy, has developed the international PhD Program in Medical Physics and Medical Engineering (MPME) to produce PhD graduates who are capable of applying state-of-the-art knowledge and research and innovation skills in the field of medical physics and medical engineering to sustainably contribute to the improvement of capacity and advancement of quality of the medical sector in Thailand to international level.
Medical physics employs physical concepts for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases while medical engineering applies engineering principles and design concepts in medicine and biology for healthcare purposes. With the combination of medical physics and medical engineering, students will gain a broad perspective, from design and development to application of medical equipment and medical technology.
The direct connection of the MPME PhD program to Chulabhorn Hospital will give students the opportunity to be exposed to the clinical environment from the very early stages of their studies. They will get first-hand experience with medical equipment and technology that drive healthcare services, enabling them to conduct state-of-the-art research projects that will truly benefit the healthcare industry and patients.
The MPME PhD program has research-based study plans for holders of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Each student will have an individual study plan (ISP), designed between the student and PhD advisors. With the multi-disciplinary faculty staff, students will have the opportunity to select research projects from a wide range of key areas, including:
- AI and big data in radiation therapy and radiology
- Simulation and modelling in radiation therapy and radiation protection
- Medical image processing
- Radiobiology and radiobiological modelling
- Management of quality assurance and predictive maintenance of medical devices
- Space engineering for health science
- Surface modification in biomedical applications
- Development of cloud-based medical software

The MPME PhD program is currently accepting applications for the academic year 2023:
