TIJC enters 14th year with another extensive program

Happy days are about to return for jazz lovers with the Thailand International Jazz Conference 2023 (TIJC 2023). Thailand’s most fantastic jazz event is set to include world-renowned artists such as Javon Jackson & Delfeayo Marsalis, Emmet Cohen Trio, Laurent de Wilde Trio, Sketchbook Quartet, and more. Plus Jazz with Thailand Phil Feat, Javon Jackson & Delfeayo Marsalis, Pomelo Town and highlighted works of Sonny Rollins, the legendary American sax player glorified by virtuoso artists. Save the dates to tune in on 27 -29 January 2023 at the College of Music, Mahidol University, Salaya.

“The TIJC has reached its 14th year, showing the cooperation of jazz musicians across the country, along with world-class artists presented by embassies in Thailand,” reflected Dr. Narong Prangcharoen, Dean of the College of Music, Mahidol University.

“Special thanks to the French, German, Austrian and Italian missions for appreciating what we do and supporting bands to attend the event. This year we will see and hear quite a lot of jazz from Europe. Artists from America and big bands from Asia and Thailand will also join together on stage. It's like a whole new year celebration for jazz lovers to come together with no borders of language, race, or skin colour. There are artists of all ages, from legendary musicians to young generations from our Youth Camp. So it’s really an extensive and seamless stage.”

“What makes it even more special is that it is the first time the jazz band competition has been open to all ages and styles of music with a jazz identity to participate in the TIJC Solo Competition 2023 and the TIJC Jazz Band Competition 2023. As such, this jazz competition will give a learning experience that cannot be found anywhere else because world-class artists are the judges.”

Darin Pantoomkomol, Chair of the Jazz Department, College of Music, Mahidol University, commented that, “This year, the programme of artists is really extensive, especially those from Europe. We will see instruments rarely seen in jazz such as the violin which will be played by artists such as Luca Ciarla and Sandro Roy. Jazz piano master Laurent de Wilde will blend each person's talents with jazz. Those who enjoy classical violin should not miss it.”

“One of the acts many people are waiting for is Music 101 Feat including Delfeayo Marsalis and Javon Jackson, the world-class jazz artists from the United States, formerly of Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. Sonny Rollins is their hero, so they wrote a song honouring the virtuoso saxophonist that they will perform with the Thailand Phil. The Solo Competition Final Round theme songs will also feature Sonny’s hits.”

“Outstanding Thai artists participating in the event well worth hearing include ASIA 7 and Pure-Ekaphan Wanasut, winner of The Voice All Star.  Plus we are also delighted to welcome bands from the music academies this year, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.”

The show will be on the oval stage during the day. Admission is free for all three days, including a line-up of over 40 small, medium and big bands.
