ICONSIAM's Grand 5th Anniversary Extravaganza Lights Up Bangkok's Riverfront

Celebrate a decade of ICONSIAM's extraordinary journey with dazzling festivities.

ICONSIAM, a visionary mega-complex project nestled along the Chao Phraya River, symbolising the future and representing Thailand's prosperity, proudly celebrates its fifth year of monumental success. It stands as a transformative force in the business landscape, propelling ICONSIAM to international acclaim as an essential destination.

Mr. Supoj Chaiwatsirikul, Managing Director of ICONSIAM Co., Ltd., expressed, "ICONSIAM is immensely proud to announce the successful realisation of a vital mission, aligning with the visionary objectives set by our three co-investors: Siam Piwat, Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited, and Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited. The project has truly become a magnetic attraction, positioning Thailand as the foremost destination in the hearts of people worldwide. Today, ICONSIAM has earned accolades from both Thai citizens and visitors from every corner of the globe, solidifying its status as a new global destination and a genuine symbol of Thailand along the banks of the Chao Phraya River."

Mr. Supoj further emphasised that over its remarkable five-year journey, ICONSIAM has emerged as a pivotal game-changer and a vital driving force that has significantly contributed to strengthening Thailand's economy in the wake of the recent economic crisis. It has successfully established a new hub for both business and tourism along the Chao Phraya River and the Thonburi side of Bangkok, bringing widespread prosperity and benefits to all. By 2024, ICONSIAM has set an ambitious goal to increase the number of Thai and foreign tourists in the Chao Phraya River area by more than 50% compared to 2019. This strategic initiative aims to bring diverse benefits, not only to the surrounding communities but also to all businesses operating along the Chao Phraya River.

ICONSIAM has attracted over 5,000 million baht in foreign investments, resulting in the creation of more than 300,000 jobs. Additionally, it has significantly increased land values along Charoen Nakhon Road and the vicinity of ICONSIAM, with land prices surging by over threefold. Consequently, the average land and building tax value have risen by 217%. Furthermore, the government sector has been actively involved in ongoing infrastructure enhancements, including the expansion of a transportation network encompassing the Purple Line, Blue Line, and Golden Line. This initiative extends travel options for both residents and tourists, encompassing car, skytrain, and boat transportation, thereby offering diverse and convenient travel choices. These efforts are revitalizing the business ecosystem along the Chao Phraya River, restoring vibrancy and vitality to the area.

"ICONSIAM is regarded as one of the most iconic projects, serving as a convergence point where the best of Thailand meets the best of the world. It embodies the concept 'The Best of Thailand Meets The Best of The World,' seamlessly blending the rich tapestry of Thainess in all its dimensions with the marvels of wonders from every corner of the globe, all coming together to shine in the heart of Bangkok. We serve as a role model for the development of urban projects grounded in sustainability principles. Our approach revolves around the strategy of 'Co-Creation,' fostering collaboration and generating shared benefits for all stakeholders through the concept of 'Creating Shared Value.' This strategy enables our sustainable growth in tandem with all sectors, producing a positive impact on society, the community, and the environment. It stands as an integral part of our journey to elevate ICONSIAM to global greatness," said Mr. Supoj.

"This achievement has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of our partners across various sectors, including the government, private sector, civil society, and the communities connected to our projects. Therefore, on this momentous occasion of ICONSIAM's 5th anniversary, we extend a heartfelt invitation to all sectors to come together and celebrate under the theme 'The 5th Anniversary of The ICON Unrivalled.' Together, we can demonstrate to the world that Thailand stands on par with any nation across the globe."

Further proof of our success lies in our continuous growth over the past five years. Additionally, ICONSIAM's commitment to supporting SMEs is exemplified by the distribution of income to 12,700 small entrepreneurs within SOOKSIAM and ICONCRAFT.

Mr. Supoj Chaiwatsirikul, Managing Director of ICONSIAM Co., Ltd., has shared that ICONSIAM's operating results continue to exhibit consistent growth. In the first six months of 2023, the company's income surged by an impressive 25% compared to the previous year, 2022. ICONSIAM has successfully cultivated a loyal customer base, comprising both affluent Thai residents and discerning foreign tourists. Our strategy revolves around delivering exceptional experiences that surpass expectations while consistently organising world-class events, establishing itself as a hub for showcasing both Thai and world-class art. Guided by the principle of 'Collaboration to Win,' ICONSIAM has earned recognition as a world-class destination, fostering an environment where partners thrive together.

"We take great pride in the remarkable business growth of ICONSIAM, which has shared its success and prosperity with many of its neighbouring allies, especially the SMEs located in SOOKSIAM on the G floor of ICONSIAM. Over the last five years, over 12,700 small-scale entrepreneurs have thrived alongside us, contributing to the transformation of SOOKSIAM into a renowned destination that delights tourists and gains extensive attention on social media platforms worldwide. This benefit has also extended to an additional 840 Thai brands within ICONCRAFT, located on the 4th and 5th floors, showcasing the craftsmanship of Thai artisans to travellers from all corners of the globe," said Mr. Supoj.

Mr. Supoj further elaborated that in alignment with the government's policy to support and invigorate the economy while attracting both domestic and international tourists, a comprehensive campaign has been devised to commemorate the 5th anniversary of ICONSIAM. As part of this initiative, a substantial budget of 500 million baht has been allocated to create an extensive marketing plan, including grand spectacles, world-class events, enticing promotions, and a plethora of engaging entertainment activities. Thailand's diverse soft power assets are harnessed as a compelling magnet to entice visitors from all walks of life. This initiative is set to roll out from October 2023 to February 2024, spanning a five-month period. With these efforts in place, there is strong confidence that the last quarter of this year will see a 70% increase in visitor numbers.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), expressed, "ICONSIAM is a source of immense pride for Thai people. The name ICONSIAM shines as a prominent highlight of Thailand and stands as a foremost landmark that draws a substantial number of tourists to our country. ICONSIAM fulfils a wide spectrum of needs, serving as a cultural hub, offering diverse activities and culinary delights, and showcasing traditional festivals. All these elements constitute Thailand's soft power. TAT extends its heartfelt gratitude to ICONSIAM for its contribution to stimulating the tourism economy of Thailand."

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt remarked, "When it comes to the key to the city's success, the government sector plays a vital facilitating role. However, it's noteworthy that many projects are also effectively driven by the private sector. In the past, ICONSIAM has curated numerous engaging waterfront activities, including a captivating kite flying festival. This event proved to be enchanting as it provided families with an opportunity to participate in activities that are often rare to come by. Additionally, the iconic countdown event held at ICONSIAM has gained international recognition, firmly establishing itself on the global events map. These examples underscore the fact that a city's success cannot rely solely on the government's efforts. While the government plays a crucial facilitating role, the private sector often excels in organising events and understanding the preferences and interests of tourists."

"This year marks our dedicated focus on leveraging soft power to stimulate tourism. The government is also planning an initiative called ‘Colorful Bangkok’ to infuse the city with colourful activities, especially during the festive month of December when the city will come alive with the Winter Festival. It's imperative that we collaborate closely, and the benefits will be reaped by both the city and the nation. Together, we aspire to make our city a welcoming and vibrant place for all."

Sanan Angubolkul, Chairman of the Board of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand, said, "The operations and achievements of ICONSIAM, now celebrating its 5-year anniversary, have undeniably demonstrated its ability to noticeably enhance the quality of life for people in the Thonburi side of the city. Simultaneously, ICONSIAM serves as a pivotal landmark in shaping Thailand's image, contributing significantly to the nation's economy and providing economic support to people, especially SMEs. This support facilitates the continuous growth of business operators, spanning from large enterprises to medium-sized and small-scale businesses."

Aliwassa Pathnadabutr, Chairman of CBRE (Thailand) Company Limited, noted, "The rise of ICONSIAM should be viewed as a significant value addition to the surrounding region, particularly in the Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San area. Its presence has ignited interest among project developers and investors, leading to a rise in land prices, which have increased more than threefold. Along the river next to Charoen Nakhon Road, land prices have risen from a range of 150,000 to 250,000 baht per square meter to an impressive 800,000 to 900,000 baht per square meter. Similarly, across the street on Charoen Nakhon Road, prices have seen a remarkable increase, rising from 150,000 baht per square meter to 640,000 baht per square meter as of today. Furthermore, the enhancement of infrastructure and transportation systems, encompassing road networks, rail systems, and waterways, has made the Charoen Nakhon-Khlong San area even more appealing."

Commander Prinya Rakwathin, President of the Association of Chao Phraya Commerce and Business, remarked, "When we reflect on the launch of ICONSIAM five years ago, we must acknowledge that its inauguration served as an immensely powerful draw for businesses along the Chao Phraya River, spanning the entire route from Bangkok Bridge to Pinklao Bridge. ICONSIAM has added a vibrant and enriching dimension to the experiences of both Thai residents and foreign visitors in Thailand. Its positive impact extends to stimulating the economy for businesses along the Chao Phraya River, yielding favourable outcomes across various aspects, including the passenger ship system, tour boats, hotels, condominiums, and a variety of riverside activities. This has significantly boosted growth figures within the tourism business sector along the Chao Phraya River."

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Niramon Serisakul, Associate Professor in the Department of Regional and Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, and Director of the Urban Design and Development Center (UddC), stated, "ICONSIAM and UddC have been longstanding partners, working collaboratively to contribute to the development of the Kadi Chin-Khlong San area. Our collaboration extends beyond physical enhancements, covering the creation of green spaces in the neighbourhood, bridge planting initiatives, and adjustments to public parks. In addition, we actively engage in organising events and activities to raise awareness about the cultural heritage district, which represents a rich tapestry of multiculturalism, encompassing Buddhist, Christian, and Islamic influences. We have also provided support for the establishment of the Kadi Chin-Khlong San Community Foundation, an organisation that serves as a unifying force for networks driving the development of the district."

Asst. Prof. Dr. Tatchaya Wannabovoradet, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, commented, "Typically, a department store is just a retail space. However, ICONSIAM has set higher aspirations, establishing a new standard for business institutions that are committed to community engagement. It has successfully fostered collaboration among the private sector, higher education institutions, the youth of the nation, and the local communities. This partnership leverages soft power and localisation to showcase the unique arts and cultural highlights of the community on a global stage. The goal is to facilitate the development and sustainable growth of the community."

Krisana Lalai, the president of the Friendly Design for All Foundation, emphasised, "Individuals using mobility aids rely heavily on critical infrastructure, particularly universal design architecture. This design ethos ensures that every visitor feels a sense of friendliness and a warm welcome through the design elements. ICONSIAM stands as a benchmark for Thailand's preparedness in this regard. The space is thoughtfully designed to be welcoming to all, regardless of their ethnicity or religious beliefs. It has built an environment where we don't feel disabled or burdensome to those around us. It's a place that embraces inclusivity, ensuring no one is left behind or isolated in the car."
