PWA Launches Public Drought Relief Initiative 2024

PWA partners with allies to present “Public and Government Drought Relief 2024 initiative

The Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), in conjunction with the Royal Thai Army (RTA), the Department of Groundwater Resources, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), and PTT Public Company Limited, initiated the "Public and Government Drought Relief 2024" campaign at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters, located on Ratchadamnoen Nok road, Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok, on March 6, 2024. This endeavour aims to provide 234 free-of-charge water supply points to assist individuals nationwide affected by the ongoing drought crisis.

Chakapong Kamchan, Deputy Governor (Operation 2) and Acting Governor of PWA, emphasised, "Thailand is currently grappling with the onset of the hot season, intensified by the El Niño phenomenon, leading to drought conditions in various regions and a scarcity of potable water. The PWA remains vigilant in monitoring water situations in drought-prone areas and is prepared to produce ample tap water to mitigate adverse impacts on people's lives." He further noted the collaborative efforts between the PWA, RTA, the Department of Groundwater Resources, PEA, and PTT Public Company Limited, spanning 22 years, in executing the "Public and Government Drought Relief" project.

As part of this year's drought relief initiative, the PWA has established free water distribution points across its 234 branches nationwide to facilitate the supply of water to affected communities and remote areas grappling with drinking water shortages. In 2023 alone, the initiative succeeded in distributing up to 90 million litres of tap water to alleviate the plight of drought-affected populations.”

The Acting Governor underscored the importance of prudent water usage and the recognition of its value to ensure an adequate supply of clean water throughout the dry season. He urged individuals to monitor and uphold the cleanliness of water sources, thereby promoting sustainable water resource management. Moreover, individuals encountering drought conditions or facing drinking water shortages can seek assistance from the PWA at any of its 234 branches nationwide or through the 24-hour accessible PWA Contact Center at 1662.

The press conference unveiling the campaign was convened at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters on Ratchadamnoen Nok road, Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok, on March 6, 2024.
